Dolores Gattuso Goodson

DC Placeholder

25.5” x 23.5”

Pretty much self explanatory living in the DMV. I was born in Alaska a couple months after it became our 49th state. A few months later Hawaii entered the Union.....that's 62 years since we added a new State....it's time for the District of Columbia to be next. I wondered what the flag would look like adding a new star and of course a few keystrokes later found it had already been designed. Hand quilted and tied using upcycled shirts, jeans and upholstery fabrics I created an unfinished flag with the DC placeholder. State abbreviations have been embroidered on the stars in order of entry into the Union starting with Delaware and hopefully soon DC. May it not be the last.

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska into a military family, Dolores spent her younger years traveling with plenty of colored pencils, paper and scissors. Soon that paper became fabric and the possibilities opened up. Fabric and thread became clothing and quilts, bags and wall hangings. She is never far from the next new technique or the next big inspiration. Block printing and watercolor pens is another new obsession.

Dolores has a landscape quilt in the Inspired by the National Parks book published in 2016, a quilt in the Inspired by Elvis book published in 2018 and a mini in the Eye Contact: creating a connection book first displayed at the Sacred Threads 2019 Showcase. Elvis and Eye Contact are currently touring around the United States.

In 2017 “Splitting Logs” mini quilt was in the second issue of Curated Quilts.

Dolores has also had pieces in several art exhibits by the DC Modern Quilt Guild presented by the Arlington Costume Lab at Gallery 3700 in Arlington, VA, and art quilts at Franklin Park Arts Center in Purcellville, VA, Round Hill Arts Center, Round Hill, VA, Loudoun County Government Building, Leesburg, VA and Leesburg Government Center, Leesburg, VA.

Currently creating pieces for the Social Justice Sewing Academy and The Tiny Pricks Project.

Dolores currently gardens, creates and lives in Loudoun County, VA with her husband, Don.
