On Saturday, July 20, DCMQG members gifted DC organizer Felix Macaraeg (they/them) a beautiful quilt, and wrapped them in its warmth and beauty. The butterfly quilt, part of the social justice committee's Wrapped in Love for Justice project, was designed by member and treasurer Lorraine Robidoux. Many DCMQG members contributed to the quilt, from piecing blocks to assembling, quilting, and binding it. The blocks were based on a free pattern by LillyElla.

Felix is the Organizing Director of Beloved Community Incubator. The social justice committee chose to honor Felix for their organizing in 2020, when they led a successful campaign to secure more than $75 million in cash assistance for workers and worker-owners excluded from federal pandemic relief and stimulus funds.

Felix invited five social justice movement friends to join them at the gathering. Together, DCMQG members and new friends shared food, music, and stories about quilting and community organizing. Felix was visibly moved by the gift, and shared that they felt seen and felt deep connection to the butterfly imagery. It was a beautiful day.

Wrapped in Love for Justice is an ongoing project of DCMQG’s social justice committee to honor social justice movement organizers and leaders who make the greater DC region more just and equitable for all. Previous quilts have honored Dolores Huerta, Heather Booth, and the abolition organization Harriet's Wildest Dreams. The project was created by committee chair Cassandra McKee. DCMQG's next Wrapped in Love for Justice quilt is in progress.
