Virginia HodgeVOTE43” x 23.5”I began this quilt in 2016 inspired by the historic occurrence of a woman in a major political party running for President of the United States. Our country was already on a path of great political divisiveness and intolerance, so I merged the concepts of encouraging all to cast their hard won right to vote with recognizing that neither citizens nor issues are solely red or blue nor solely liberal or conservative. Hence, the symbols of our two major political parties (elephant and donkey) go from red to purple then purple to blue. I used the fabric collage technique to create the elephant and donkey and machine applique for the words and stars. Quilting was done on a domestic machine. The stars running vertically through the center of the quilt were stitched from the back of the quilt.
